About 7 years ago my boss (yes I did use to work for someone else) said to me:

“Henry – you are a big disappointment – you will never be any good at selling.”

Ooohh… Thanks I thought… And promptly left the company… Ran out of money and started hunting the sofa for pennies for dinner! And in a weird kind of way he was right.

I’d kinda made a catastrophic descent from ‘stardom’.

Having generated over $14 million the year before I started this job my boss was expecting a lot. Trouble was I just was not interested – at all.

Having proved I could do it (sell) my real personality took back over and there is not one bone in my body that’s a natural salesman. I’m shy, awkward in crowds and prefer to stay well out of the limelight.

People in suits and ties with their briefcases, shiny teeth and slick talking literally ‘make me feel ill”.

I just feel so sorry for them. I can see their real personalities, their real selves locked away behind that suit or crisply pressed blouse. Living a life of quiet desperation (and in fact, most of our population lives this life of quiet desperation).

And I used ot be one of those people living a life of quiet desperation. Like a bear locked in a cage.

Until that horrible old boss did me a favour – and sent me packing.

Since then I’ve worn a suit ONCE – and that was for my younger brother wedding. And since then I have never been happier and never made more money.

And I’m on a little crusade.

A little crusade to MAKE SURE that salon and spa owners like you the world over do not live that life of quiet desperation.

I’m sure you don’t.

That’s great.

But what about your staff – are they secretly locked away behind a curtain of ‘professionalism’, are they living a life of ‘quiet desperation’?

Because here’s the thing that will set your profits on a path skyward at lightning speed.

Once you discover who you really are and you attract people who are really like you – you will naturally create a bond so powerful and a friendship so ‘cool’ that selling won’t even be in your vocabulary.

Money troubles will melt away – and you can achieve whatever you want.

And the same is true for ANYONE who interacts with your clients.

Once they become themselves – their real selves then they too will attract people who will naturally spend money with them. I know this happens already in your business.

You will have some clients who are like real friends – you chat, laugh and when you recommend something (as long as they can afford it – and often even if not) they happily spend money with you.

The trick is to make this happen with everybody.

And that starts by simply being your REAL self and by nurturing your staff to be their REAL selves.

When I did this I went from being freakin scared to death of hearing from customers because I just didn’t like them (back in that old job) to having a right old giggle helping my friends make more money in their salons and spas by helping them be themselves and get more clients they like…

And that transformed me from a suit wearing ‘stiff’ with a briefcase full of sadness – back to what I was like at college… Shorts, flip flops, fun with the family, good books and walks along the beach.

Have a think about it – and just make sure you’re not being one of those ‘stiffs’… There’s no need…

And if you’ve got any good stories about making this kind of change then pop them in the comments and let’s laugh about them together.

Best,

Henry.

Sorry – gremlins in the system

Not sure if this has happened to you?

Here’s the story.

I’ve been working away as a kind of ‘salon and spa marketing spy’ for years now. As I mentioned in my last email I’mnot a highly polished ‘suit and tie’, ‘slick back hair’, ‘smooth talking’, ‘briefcase wielding’, intimidating consultantafter your last drop of cash in return for a new logo, telling you to cut staff and get a new website.

In fact, I binned my suit and tie when I left the corporate world and promised myself I’d never wear one of those ‘suckers again’. That’s me. I prefer results to do the talking over a fake armani suit from eBay.

I actually fell into salon and spa marketing by ‘accident’. Because there are few industries around set for such spectacular growth as the beauty industry over the next 5, 10, 15 years – so you are in the right place.

I helped a few people out and before I knew it I was being ‘hounded’ by people all over the place for help.

Trouble is I’m so busy spending my time doing the things I love like walking along the beach here, taking lazy days out with my fiancee (mainly buying every cute baby outfit we can find at the mo), and sitting in our beach hut writingthat I don’t have time to work with loads of people.

I’d like to – but that would mean giving up a bit ‘me’ – and nobody should have to do that.

So, a while back I put together a bunch of the stuff I do into a package and gave it away as a free gift to anyone who wanted it and would pay shipping.

And I agreed (after some persuading) to put down my best ideas every month and send them to them.

Those freebies went in a shot and they’ve been sold out for quite a while.

Once we get passed a certain volume it just gets too much work and encroaches on beach and family time.

BUT – quite a few peeps have been finding the links to the free gifts on my website and then discovered they’re sold out.

THE GREMLIN is that we used this automatic email system thingy to send out emails about the free gift and depspite it being sold out they are still sending – AHHHH!!!

So SORRY!

To those who asked about the free gift, get emails about it but can’t get it!

I’m trying to get the automatic email wotsit sorted to stop sending those out.

And this isn’t an email to say

“GET READY” the freebies are coming back. Because right now they’re not.

Your best bet is to keep posting questions and comments on here and I’ll do my best to answer all those.

Have a superb day,

Henry.

Henry Played Drums on Stage With Bon

I finally got a new pair of drum sticks this past weekend.

I haven’t picked up a pair for over 10 years…

“So what Henry!”

Well, I was watching TV last week and Bon Jovi popped up and it reminded me of playing on stage with him in front of 30,000 odd people at the Milton Keynes Bowl back in 1996.

It was during his “These Days Tours”.

You know it’s pretty weird seeing all the shenanagans that go on back stage… Very weird actually.

But not half a weird as when I met Bon – he was about 3 foot shorter than I expected and disarmingly handsome (git) and I in no way have  any gay tendencies (don’t get me wrong, some of my best friends are gay).

Anyway, seeing Bon again on TV got me tapping away on my legs and triggered the feelings there was something missing in my life.

And that something is drumming!

And hence why I got myself a nice shiny new pair of sticks – now I need some drums – the stairs are already battered…

What’s that got to do with you – ummm – let’s see….

It reminded me of how easy it is to mix up the things you really enjoy and love with the things that actually aren’t so important.

I love drumming – I mean, give me anything that looks like a stick and I’ll be banging away and driving you nuts before you can snatch it back.

But I’d stopped drumming and focused on other things for 10 years – and silly as it seems there was a hole in my world…

And that hole causes more problems than you might think.

Imagine this for a moment.

There are two circles that define your life.

One is the way you act now, what you do, what you focus on.

And the other is the person you REALLY are. What you’re REALLY ‘all about’…

For 99% of people these two circles are light years apart.

The 40 year old insurance salesman who hates his job and dreams of being in a rock band.

The 20 year old salesman who has to pretend every day he’s something he’s not and pretend he enjoys selling (that was me back in the day).

The wife stuck at home shopping and cleaning who dreams of a life on the catwalk.

The salon owner who constantly tries to attract the clients he thinks he needs but for some reason can’t keep them..

Look – this is deep stuff and it’s the root of all unhappiness.

You see happiness and MASSIVE acceleration towards your goals happens when.

You get the two circles to line up perfectly.

The person you REALLY are and the person you PROJECT to the world become one.

Nothing bothers you – nothing can upset you – you wake up excited every single day – and achieving what you want in your salon, your spa, you relationships, your family, your health or whatever becomes a walk in the park…

Heavy stuff huh…

Powerful stuff…

And these two circles control your destiny…

A few years back after a series of BIG failures – I’d lost 3 jobs on the trot – because I hated them, was up to my eyeballs in debt and was living in Mums cellar with my fiancee and 5 cats, and was literally on the brink of despair.

I stumbled across this idea on the two circles.

Realised mine were so so far apart you’d need a football pitch to draw and decided to fix it.

Every single day now I wake up between 4am and 5am, immediately get up and am so excited about the day ahead I could burst. And I don’t get up that early coz I have to – I  literally CANNOT wait to.

And I’ve achieved more success in the last few years than I could possibly have dreamed of.

And all I had to do was sit down, draw my two circles, write down what’s in each and simply line them up…

Heavy stuff…

Give it a try and let me know how you get on.

Best,

Henry.

Henry,

My first ever real job was selling for IBM.

Big problem.

Selling is about as natural to me as making jewellery. And trust me, even the thought of going to Hobby Craft  with Tracey brings me out in a hot sweat.

The thought of speaking to people I didn’t know would literally keep me up all night.

I hated it, hated it, hated it.

And in the end that’s why I quit and created my own businesses instead.

But, through some simple things I learned from people much wiser than me I did manage to rake in over $14mill
in one year
while at IBM (I’ve used $’s there because this email program won’t display a ? pound sign – see – correctly).

And to this day I don’t consider myself in anyway talented in selling. Anyone can learn to create money on demand
in their business.

And that applies to your salon or spa.

There are quite few so called ‘gurus’ popping up now all desperately trying to suck you into buying their stuff by throwing at you over and over again.

Some of them do have some really cool stuff. Some of them are downright charlatans.

Don’t misunderstand me – I do sometimes offer stuff for you to buy. Stuff which is REALLY tried and tested and works.

You CANNOT buy anything from me right now. So please don’t ask.

I’d rather help you out now and you can decide if ya wanna listen to me or not.

And today I’m going to point you to another freebie article which will help you solve a common challenge.

“How to STOP No Shows!”

Best,

Henry.

Hey, Henry Here.

Summer’s leaving us…

Let the good times roll!

Christmas is coming – and I love Christmas. Dark evenings, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, mince pies, late night shopping. We had a really chilly day on Saturday – I know it was chilly because I’ve had to put the oil heater back in the beach hut.

BIG NEWS!

Signs are promising that we’re emerging the either side of recession – not  that I paid a blind bit of attention anyway – and that means it’s time to start ‘sucking’ in as many new clients as we can.

Hordes of them.

So, I’m going to be ramping up the hints and tips over the next few weeks and do my absolute best to help you make the next few months your best ever.

But, to get that started I need YOUR INPUT – I’ll spill the beans as to why once the responses are in.

I need YOU to tell me what your TOP 3 methods are for attracting new clients.

And before you say “Henry! That’s what you’re supposed to tell me!” – I know – BUT, it’s a lot FASTER and MORE EFFICIENT to get what you’re doing NOW pumping like Luis Hamilton’s V10 Formula One engine than it is to start teaching you new stuff here.

So – if you want to make the next few months your best ever – let’s get there together.

Please post in the comments here the THREE BEST methods you use to get new clients.

And once the responses are in – I’ll be back with something cool.

Speak soon.

Best, Henry.

PS: For those who haven’t yet heard, Tracey now know the patter of little feet joining us on Valentines day next year (if the little one decides to arrive on time) will be a boy! We’re both over the moon – I’m not sure I’ve ever been so excited… And THANK YOU to everyone who’s sent in cards and congrats messages. We’ve read and appreciated every single one.
