Hello
I think one of the biggest challenges I have with staff( and they are a great staff ) is keeping some of them motivated. With the economy down business is actually still good but it can stay even better when they are motivated and suggest services to the clients that would truely benefit the client and really keep them coming back. How to keep them in that frame of mind is a real challenge!

Hi Sherry,

I understand.

And you’re not alone.

This is a big challenge (and of course not just in beauty but in pretty much every business).

You’ll never change the fact that profit is your top priority for your staff and THEIR top priority is what’s hapenning at the weekend, what’s on TV tonight, how their children are doing at school, where they should go on holiday…

Your profits are way down their list… Somewhere around number 15!

However, there ARE things we can do to get them really fired up to make you money.

AND of course that will only happen through giving the best possible service to your clients.

Best, Henry.

Hi, I have good staff( very lovely to the clients, warm and friendly, dont gossip, trustworthy, presentable etc.) but as the comment above stated, there doesn’t seem to be that ability to think ‘how can i get my client to spend more or book more apts’.They just perform a good service and leave it at that. Where as I am always thinking 10 steps ahead in organising timing of apts, treatment rooms etc to maximise profit while still providing the best service. Becuause they get an excellent hourly rate and commision on top they are quite happy to stroll around accepting whatever comes there way while I’m the one run ragged all day multitasking! But maybe thats why they are not runninr their own buisness.I need all 4 of my treatment rooms to be full all the time and they are not! But we are quite busy still. I feel half my time is spent cleaning and tidying, filling in treatment records and organising etc. But that doesnt pay the bills.

Hi,my buisness is not situated on the high street and therefore i don’t get passing trade. But that is also my usp as we have breathtaking views, plenty of parking and the area is quiet and tranquil. My buisness has been built up on word of mouth and advertising. As we don’t have a reception area as such I feel i need to discourage people from just calling in as all my therapists could be in treatments and not be able to answer the door. so our policy is ’stricly by apt only’. We have 4 treatment rooms and a relaxation room but no facility for a reception. I sure my clients like the fact that we have peaceful surroundings with no reception but maybe Im not getting as much buisness as I could by not just being able to ‘pop in’. I wanted to avoid noise from young children, chatter and phones in the entrance area when treatments could be in progress a few feet away.

My biggest problem with staff, is finding quality employess, who have received all the basic training necessary, to work professionally in a salon and/or spa. So many have graduated, without their schools giving them a good foundation in salon basics. I end up having to “babysit” new employees, until I am confident they are “polished,” and sure of their own skills. This is truly an added stress on all involved, and very time consuming. I no longer assume that new staff will know how to answer the phone and take appointments properly, professionallly, and accurately! I no longer assume that they will know to refill supplies, or clean their stations after each use, or to greet all clients when they first enter our business, etc., etc…. (sigh)

Hey Jen,

Great comments – thanks.

And you’re NOT alone. It happens to us all…

And of course once you train people up – every other salon wants them!

Here’s a little piece of advice I’ve stuck to for years (I got it from one of my mentors who has sworn by it for 20 odd years).

ONLY employ people who come from a family of small business owners. And IDEALLY people who have worked in the family business. Doens’t matter what it is – doesn’t have to be beauty. Could be a restaurant, shop or whatever.

THESE people tend to have a much better grasp of how important client care is and just be much more likely to ‘hit the ground running’…

Best, Henry.
