First off… Sorry!

I’ve been a little quiet over the last week or so.

‘Eat Your Own Medicine Henry’ has been on the top of my mind for a few weeks.

And I have.

Every once in a while I head off on a MISSION to see what’s happening in the world of salon and spa marketing, see what’s changing and see what’s REALLY worth spending time on.

The number of NEW options is astonishing.

And the rate of introduction of new options is increasing!

Yesterday a brand new type of search engine was released “Wolfram Alpha”.

I spent 30 minutes or so on there last night trying to figure out just how useful it is. I’m sure I’m missing something but besides calculating the distance from Bournemouth to Dubai and convert KM into miles I couldn’t figure out how it could help us.

Then I got confused.

For a brief millisecond my brain turned to jelly and everything got the better of me.

Everywhere I turned I found another ‘whizz-bang’ marketing option. Another social ‘fad’, another internet ‘gimmick’.

And OVERLOAD set in.

How could I possibly make sense of all the new marketing options available now and those about to hit us over the next few years?

How could I turn them into something that makes money for YOUR SALON OR SPA and for me?

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath and reflected.

Reflected on what’s really  important.

Reflected on what REALLY gets people to TRUST YOU.

Reflected on what REALLY gives you the ability to build a LONG TERM business.

And like a white dove descending through the clouds in a stream of sunlight I had clarity.

Everything Was Crystal Clear Again

And the ’secret’ is simple.

I KNOW you will agree.

The secret is ‘COMMUNICATION’.

That’s ALL that matters.

It makes no odds whether that’s via a letter, a postcard, an email, on a blog, on Twitter, Facebook or whatever.

99% of the emails I receive, the letters I get in the post, the ‘Twits’ I get on Twitter are just HORRIBLY badly written. 

The people sending them have put about as much thought and effort into REAL COMMUNICATION as I put into reading them (i.e. virtually none).

And therefore their salon or spa marketing FAILS.

And it fails over and over and over again.

They spend hours sending emails, hours writing letters, endless time on Facebook, Twitter, in forums and on and on. And get LOUSY, STINKING results.

Here’s a MUCH better path to choose.

Become a WORLD CLASS communicator and MASTER a small number of salon and spa marketing tools.

Then beat your competition over the head with them for years and years and years…

And keep your eyes peeled – I’ll have something to help you very, very soon…

Swine flu is sweeping (well, more kinda trotting) across the world.

And on Friday I watched the film “28 Days Later” about a ‘Rage’ virus which escapes and decimates the the UK’s population. Good film. 

Scary stuff – Tracey has had nightmares ever since.

As soon as there’s any kind of ‘viral outbreak’ the whole world seemingly goes into over-drive to find a cure.

And so it should.

For the pharmaceutical companies ’selling their wares’ (i.e. vaccinations – and yes they are a prevention but in effect a cure of the spread) becomes so easy it’s not a case of whether or not anyone will buy the ’stuff’ it’s a case of whether or not they can make enough!

However, had one of the big pharmaceuticals like Roche or Glaxo gone to the government BEFORE the outbreak and said:

‘Hey, I’ve got a feeling there’s gonna be a flu outbreak – you’d better spend a LOT of money with us so we can get everyone vaccinated’.

The response wouldn’t have been a little muted to say the least.

And herein lies a lesson for us ALL.

It is INFINETELY easier to sell CURE than it is to sell PREVENTION – even in your salon or spa.

It’s very hard to sell fire alarms to someone who has never had a fire. But, find someone who has and they’ll ’snap’ one up.

In fact (and excuse me, my memory has failed to remind me exactly where this was) in one area of the US where a fire-safety immediately dispatches salesman to areas where there are ‘bush’ fires because they know they’ll sell a bucket load.

Similarly, it’s much easier to sell:

- Creams that remove wrinkles than creams that prevent them.

- Tablets that help you lose weight than tablets that stop you getting fat (or is that exercise).

- Products that remove stains than products which prevent them.

- Products which remove scratches on your car than products which prevent them.

And on and on…

So, which do you sell?

If you HAVE to sell prevention then my advice is to look for something you can cure too…

Don’t Be Afraid to Speak Your Mind

One of my favourite mentors once told me “If you don’t offend someone every day, you’re not trying hard enough”.

When I first heard him say that I was a little kinda ’shocked’.

Offend people – how’s that gonna help?

Surely I’ll just alienate the people I want to attract as clients.

But interestingly, that is not the case.

And let me just make something clear… I don’t mean running around screaming obscenities, shouting abuse, whacking in the ‘F’ word left right and center or calling people fat, skinny, bald, ugly, poor, stuck-up, stupid, ignorant, arrogant, slow, dumb, weird or a failure (as much as I’d often like too).

Rather it’s a method of ‘pushing the boundaries’ and connecting with people beyond all the cr*p (there ya go…) that’s floating all around us.

It’s really a case of ‘If you’ve got something to say’, then ’say it’ (or do it).

Quite honestly on a few occasions it has come back and ‘taken a big chunk outta my butt’. But a little wry smile, an apology and a determination to move on always pops that back to bed.

And this idea of not be afraid to say something different, do something different is ESSENTIAL to your salon or spa success.

WHY?

Well, we’re all deeply entrenched in a pit of FEAR.

FEAR of failure, fear of success, fear of poor health, fear of old age and a whole bunch more.

Busting out of that entrapment releases the shackles and like 3 pounds of TNT under the toilet can zip you skyward at warp speed.

But there’s something I consider EVEN worse than FEAR. 

One thing which holds more people back from BIG strides forward than anything else.

And it’s a PET hate of mine.

If you wanna ‘wind me up’ – if I ever say something to offend you – if you ever fancy a little ‘pop’ at me – then send me all your EXCUSES as to why you can’t take action on the salon and spa growth secrets I impart to you.

- You can‘t do that…

- That won’t work.

- You’re not allowed to do that.

- Nobody will respond to that.

- I’m not clever enough to do that.

- I’m too old to do that.

- I’m not healthy enough to do that.

AHHHHHHHHH!!!!!

Stop it!

Any, small thinking salon or spa owner can come up with an endless list of why something can’t be done.

That’s really easy… Pitiful… Shameful…

The REAL power, the REAL path to salon/spa success, the REAL way to switch on your afterburner and jump to warp speed is to take all the ideas I and others give you and then work out how you CAN APPLY THEM!!!

There’s always a way!

Did you know that Walt Disney was fired by the editor of a newspaper for ‘lacked imagination and had no good ideas’? Did you know he was ridiculed over his idea for a theme park?

Any average person would have dumped his dream at the side of a road, jumped back into line and waddled his way through the rest of his life as inconspicuous as a Ford Mondeo.

So… Where do you sit?

Are you an excuse ridden ‘you can’t do that’ person who is quite happy to meander through their day blinkered to anything but what you know, you understand, you trust?

Or are you like Walt Disney – prepared to take the reigns, embrace fear, eliminate excuses and suck up all the ideas you can from outside you comfort zone, chop ‘em, twist em’, tweak them and then fire on all cylinders like a 6.4 litre V12 Lamborghini Murcielago and get them pumping in your business and life NOW???

I often get kind of wayward, weird, sometimes obnoxious and occasionally down right rude emails from people in response to my emails about how to grow their salon or spa.

To this day it astonishes me how a few bytes of electronic data strung into a series of words and delivered to someone via email can cause the a ‘road rage’ like response.

Here’s one response I got on Tuesday:

“Henry,

By gum lad you’ve got more sh1t than a battery of ens

Regards,”

I won’t name and shame this chap for obvious reasons.

But just look at the length he’s gone to.

For starters he bothered to put a number ‘1′ in the word shit (sorry) and then to make matters worse, his mail didn’t even make sense.

Then I got a second mail.

“Hi Henry,

Thanks for the offer of a free gift but as YOU are well aware NOTHING but NOTHING is free in this life so sorry friend I do not need your bullsh1t book

Regards”

Amazing!

A few things I have to take up here:

  1. “Hi Henry”  – nice, friendly salutation before the ‘onslaught’.
  2. Nothing is free in this life – not true. A warm smile, integrity, friendship, love, kindness, respect, air… Are all free…
  3. He calls me his friend and then says my stuff is ‘bullsh1t’ (there’s the number 1 again… weird).
  4. I haven’t ever offered him a book so I guess he never even read my emails anyway.
  5. My FREE GIFTS are free but I do ask for postage costs. I am in business too, for profit and am NOT a charity… If he begrudges spending a few quid for hundreds of pounds of information which could make him multiple times that then he’s not the success hungry type I accept as clients… (Click Here to Get Your FREE GIFT)

Suffice to say I’ve unsubscribe this ‘angry’ little chap from all my salon/spa communication.

And, the subject of email and how often to send it, what to include etc is a ‘minefield’.

BUT, this chap DID ask to receive my stuff. He actually asked for it, then told me off about it… Absolute genius.

I’m very careful to be sure that the salon/spa business growth information I ‘pump’ out is of good quality and useful.

However, if it isn’t relevant for a particular person I take NO offence if they wish to unsubscribe and stop receiving it. There are too many people BITING my arm off for it.

Anyway, what point am I trying to make here?

Well there are really TWO:

NUMBER 1: “The higher you climb, the more you ‘ass’ hangs out” – can’t remember where I first heard that but it is TRUE. Whatever profession you are in, the more success you find, the more people will want to (and enjoy) taking a ‘pop’ at you.

Do NOT let it bother you. In fact, embrace and enjoy it.

NUMBER 2: You need a THICK skin to be ultra-successful. The path to your goals will be paved with challenges, setbacks, failures, people screaming at you and worse. My response is always the same…

“Ummm… Interesting…”

Re-focus and ‘BLAM’… I’m off again…

So, next time someone tells you ‘You’re clogging up my email’ (I just don’t get that – it takes less than 1/2 a calorie to press the delete button) or they make a ’slight’, ‘offensive’ or ‘hurtful’ remark about what you do, deliver, offer, your products, services or treatments or whatever… REMEMBER… It really doesn’t matter….

“The Higher You Climb, the More Your Ass Hangs Out!” – And that’s GOOD news…
