How to Stop Salon and Spa Theft

Posted by: henrybaker | Comments (2)

Ooohhhh…..

I’m writing this post in response to a GREAT question from Audrey (I won’t mention here surname because I wouldn’t want her staff or clients ever finding this).

Bit of a touchy subject.

The unfortunate truth is that EVERYONE is out to ‘get your chips’.

And that does sometimes mean people will steal from you.

The odd bottle of product slipping into a staff members handbag.

A few new products disappearing from your treatment rooms.

It happens in all walks of life. People WILL steal.

And short of locking up all your products, covering your salon/spa in cameras and strip searching clients and staff before they leave — wha can you do to combat it?

Well…

I’ve been fortunate enough to have a fair amount of contact with a chap who specialised in ‘Theft Control’.

And the advice I’m about to dispense is based on over 20 years of his experience in combatting — in particular — retail and service business theft.

Here’s the premise.

Imagine for a moment your 7 years old again.

You’ve been baking some yummy chocolate muffins with grany all morning.

Despite your please she wouldn’t let you taset ‘the mixture’ because it contained raw egg (which might make you ill).

So you have to sit through the temptation of that yummy chocolate bowl of deliciousness and sit through the scrummy chocolately smell as they bake in the oven.

Once done, granny delicately slips the baking tray from the oven, places it on the kitchen table and you both sit there looking at the muffins while they cool.

You can literally taste the soft sponge and warm chocolate and it slips into your mouth.

BUT, granny won’t let you have a muffin until after dinner…. :-(

Then granny says “Oh… Just got to nip upstairs and remove the curlers from my hair”.

“Ok granny” you say.

And granny waddles upstairs.

You’re left alone with the tray of warm yummy muffins.

“I mustn’t take one” you think.

“How many are there?”

“Will granny know if I take one?”

“NAH!!! Of course she won’t!!!”

And with that you whip a muffin off the tray, gobble it down and re-arrange the rest of the muffins.

Ha ha!!!

Granny returns none the wiser!!!

You 1 – Granny Nil…

And something quite similar happens to SOME of your staff and clients when they see things they’d like and THINK they can get away with it.

Here’s what granny should have.

BEFORE she left us sat with the muffins she should have said:

“Now Henry – I’ve counted the muffins and there are 12. When I come down from taking my curlers out I expect there to STILL be 12 muffins.”

What has granny accomplished.

Simple – she stopped me stealing a muffin!

And you can use the same simple technique in your salon/spa.

1. Make it KNOWN you KNOW how much of everything you have.

2. Tell people you leave with things how many there are.

3. Make it KNOWN you’ll be counting them again.

Simple but a HUGE deterent.

Hope that helps!

Speak soon,

Henry.

I’m not a fan of beauty salon price lists or prices list for any spa or nail salon or hair salon.

In fact if I could I’d get you to do away with them COMPLETELY.

Salon price lists are a very bad way to show what you do.

And most are even worse than that!

Put two beauty salon price lists side by side and too often the only way you’re left to distinguish between the two is by PRICE!!!

AAAGGHHH!!!

That puts you in a really weak position!

Competing on price is NOT where you want to be.

Look.

I don’t have time here to tell you about the alternatives – it’s a BIG story and requires a number of changes.

Changes that elevate you above ALL your competition and allow you to charge as much as 500% or more than your closest competitor.

BUT, I know I’ll struggle to convince you to get rid of that awful price list so here are THREE things you can do to atl least minimse the damage caused by your price list…

1. Don’t just list your treatmens. INLCUDE BENEFITS. How will they make people look and feel? Why are they different?

2. Do NOT INCLUDE prices. Make them ASK you what they are. That gives you the chance to tell them why you’re different and substantiate the price.

3. Include a MONEY BACK GUARANTEE! This is the fastest way to separate you from your competition and boost sales. And as long as you’re doing a good job, the bump in sales will FAR outweigh refunds..

There are tons more I could give you but do these three and TELL ME HOW YOU GET ON.

Dedicated to your success,

Henry.

Hey,

Couldn’t resist this today.

I’ve been reading a lot about the history of our industry – where it came from and thus perhaps where we’re going.

I came across a great book called “Inventing Beauty” by Teresa Riordan. I think it’s out of print but you can grab a copy on Amazon (quite expensive…).

It’s packed full of bsolutely ingenious old beauty ads.

And a lot of them are actually really good. I mean – check this one out.

I bet Posh Spice hasn’t got one of those!

But in all seriousness – can you spot WHY this is such a good ad?

Best, Henry.

PS: I’ve been going kinda ‘video mad’ lately and have some really useful videos I’ll point you to next week. Look out for the mails – they’ll really help.

It's Not Me in the Pic. I Was Too Busy Laughing...

It's Not Me in the Pic. I Was Too Busy Laughing...

Quick ‘heads up’… HA!

That’s just reminded me of one Tracey’s uncles.

He’s an avid shooting fanatic. We went clay pigeon shooting with him not long back and he had me in stiches.

We were huddled up in this kinda ‘bunker’ (I was cold and half petrified) and someone else was releasing the clays.

As we sat in the bunker he shouted at me:

“Look up – keep ya head down!”

To which I had no option but to burst into laughter and roll around in the mud.

Although it kinda makes sense looking back – at the time it just sounded ridiculous…

Anyway:

‘Keep Ya Head Up’

Yesterday I mentioned I might record a video for you on how you can use the internet to get clients for your salon or spa (most people make it much harder than it really is – and I reckon to confuse you).

If there was enough interest.

Silly question…

My inbox has been rammed with so many responses my eyes go weird when I try to pick out any other emails.

So YES! I will do the vid!

And sorry if you didn’t get a personal response. I responded myself to as many as I could face before the old repetitive strain wotsit started hitting my fingers.

So keep your eyes peeled for my mails from now on.

And make today the best day ever.

Talk soon,

Henry.

P.S. If you sent in a mail with specific questions – sorry if I didn’t answer them all. I got so many it wasn’t poss. But, look out shortly – I’ll have something really cool to help.

P.P.S. If there’s anything salon internet or spa internet type stuff you particularly want to know about then pop it in the comments of this post and I’ll make sure I include it…
